CHAPTER 14

I slipped out of Daryn’s grasp, but I didn’t approach Jeremy. “Don’t go.”

Jeremy smiled. “I am not leaving for good. Just to make arrangements with those in the veil that support our cause. Magnus is trying to convince the dead his father can make them rise again. No being possesses such power, but Magnus wants to walk the earth again and there is only one way that will happen.”

Daryn slammed his hand on the counter. “We get rid of Magnus only to make him more of a threat on the veil?”

Jeremy cocked his head to the side. The action reminded me so much of A.J. I chastised myself for not seeing it before. His inflections were the same. The way he looked at me. Smiled at me. It shouldn’t have mattered what age he chose to approach me. He had been his true self. “He is weak by our standards. He does not possess his magic. But he is the demon king’s son, and his title will hold some sway in the veil with those that wish to slip the binds of the dead.”

“Will Magnus attack me?” I asked.

“No. I would never let that happen. Besides, he is not powerful enough. It takes years to be able to manifest here without being called. You will never call him, so he is trapped in the veil. Vengeful spirits last a very short time in your world when the wards are strong. They are weak now and that is why the dead are attacking you. Once you return the king to his home, or kill him, the hybrids will flee.”

Daryn glanced between me and Jeremy. “Can the hybrids return to their human form?”

“Only if they have not killed. Once they kill, they are demons and must live their life as such. They gain immortality in their demon state, so you will be forced to hunt and kill them. But as long as the king is dead or trapped, he cannot control them.”

I reached out to Jeremy before pulling back. The instinct to hug him was overwhelming, but my hand would pass through his body. The first time I had met Jeremy, he had posed as a handyman. “How did you move the boxes and help set up my bathroom?”

Jeremy chuckled. “Spirits that wish to help have many talents. I can create a corporal form here. It is my home, and I am anchored to it.”

“Do you have to leave? Will it hurt you to stay?”

Jeremy frowned. “It won’t hurt me, but after you and Caleb are safe, I have no purpose here. Spirits who stay without such goals turn vengeful and I do not wish to burden you.”

“You would never be a burden. Not to me or Caleb. We are going to renovate the house into an antique shop. People will come and buy furniture. Caleb will be living here alone when I am at Daryn’s. You can pose as a store employee. We will let the hunters know. You will be safe here.
